Yosemite National Park
- Yosemite National Park is located in east central California.
- At one time it was known as Lake Yosemite but sediment washed down and filled in Lake Yosemite which formed the present valley floor.
- The areas first residents were native Americans, they settled there about 8,000 years ago
- In 1855 tourists convinced Abraham Lincoln to sign a grant reserving Yosemite Valley as a state supervised reserve and later two magazine writers convinced congress to make it a national park in fear that it would be destroyed.
- Yosemite Park was officially established on October 1st 1890 and is the 3rd oldest national park.
- Yosemite Park is 1,200 square miles which is about 33,454,080,000 square feet; I realize that doesn’t really make sense so I’ll put it in perspective that’s approximately 580,800 football fields.
- Yosemite Park has over 27 different varieties of trees but the oldest tree in the park is 2,700 years old and is known as the grizzly giant.
- Yosemite National Park is the home 300-500 black bears.
- Yosemite is also home to bighorn sheep, golden eagles, great grey owls, coyotes, mule deer, squirrels, steller’s jays, and peregrine falcons.
- There are many different things to do at Yosemite Park such as hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, rafting, and bike riding.
- · The most popular event at Yosemite park is the Big Meadow Fire which happens in the spring but is 100% contained. The Big Meadow Fire can burn up to 7,425 acres.
